First Pass Yield (FPY), also known as Throughput Yield (TPY)

FPY measures the percentage of products that pass through a production process without any rework or defects on the first attempt

First Pass Yield (FPY), also known as Throughput Yield (TPY), is a key performance metric in manufacturing that measures the percentage of products that pass through a production process without any rework or defects on the first attempt. In other words, FPY calculates the efficiency of a process by assessing how many units meet quality standards the first time through, without the need for rework or correction.

Manufacturers calculate FPY by dividing the number of good, defect-free products by the total number of products produced in a given stage or process. For example, if 100 units enter a process and 90 come out defect-free without needing rework, the FPY is 90%.

First Pass Yield (FPY), or Throughput Yield (TPY), is critical because it highlights the quality and efficiency of a production process. A higher First Pass Yield (FPY), also known as Throughput Yield (TPY) indicates a more efficient process with fewer defects, which in turn reduces costs, waste, and production time. Conversely, a low FPY signals that defects are common, leading to increased rework, delays, and costs.

By improving FPY, manufacturers can enhance overall productivity, minimise waste, and ensure higher quality output, making it a valuable metric for continuous improvement efforts in production environments.
