Those companies are investing huge amounts of money into developing technologies related to Industry 4.0 (sensors, robots, software, etc) that allowed them to become real smart factories, to improve productivity and boost\u00a0profitability.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>But\u00a0more than\u00a080% of manufacturing companies from the EU are small and medium sized companies. They face many constraints, starting from mentality to budgets and digital education.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>The major challenges faced by manufacturers in achieving performance\u00a0at scale<\/h3>\n\n<p>Some extras\u00a0from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.capgemini.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Report-%E2%80%93-Smart-Factories.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a\u00a0CapGemini\u00a0study<\/a> from 2020 shows that \u201c<em>organizations realize that they have a massive task ahead in scaling their smart factory initiatives. Of all the organizations that have smart factory initiatives, nearly 60% say their initiatives are either struggling or that it is too early to comment. Only 14% said they would characterize their smart factory deployments so far as a success.<\/em>\u201d\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>The major challenges faced by manufacturers in achieving performance\u00a0at scale are as follows:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Deployment and integration of digital platforms and technologies (for 51% from study responders)\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Data readiness and cybersecurity (46%)\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Hybrid, soft, and digital capabilities (45%)\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Leveraging data to continuously improve operations (42%)\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Vision, leadership, and transformation (40%)\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Being efficient by design (38%)\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>The \u202flevel of digital education of employees is crucial<\/h3>\n\n<p>Another big challenge met in all small and medium factories is the\u202f<strong>level of digital education of employees<\/strong>. People are not used to work with digital systems and, to change this,\u00a0a massive effort is needed from their employers. In many cases, decisions not to acquire a digital system are taken exclusively due to lack of digital knowledge\u00a0of the\u00a0personnel, a situation\u00a0that leads to a vicious circle:\u202f<em>digital solutions are not implemented due to people&#8217;s lack of knowledge, and people do not gain more knowledge due to lack of digital solutions at their workplace<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>To help small and medium manufacturing companies to digitally evolve, the future Industry\u00a04.0 solutions and vendors need to take into consideration simultaneously aspects like:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Affordability<\/strong>: as possible, the solutions offered should be packed as service (SaaS)\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ease of use<\/strong>: the usability should be facing the fact that many users have almost no digital education\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Technology usage<\/strong>: complex technologies should be transparent for end users.
